FUTURE SCHOOL INITIATIVE BY LITHUANIA FOR UKRAINE

January 29, 2024

The Interstate Consultants Engineers Guild (ICEG) actively monitors the news and directly participates in events related to the reconstruction of Ukraine in cooperation with international partners.

During a press conference in Kyiv, on January 24, participants discussed an initiative of the Lithuanian Government in collaboration with the Agency for Restoration and with the support of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine – the project “Future School for Ukraine” was discussed. The initiative involves the development of a high-quality school adaptive technical design project through an international architectural competition. The project’s goal is to build modern, inclusive, and resilient educational institutions capable of facing the challenges of war. The jury includes internationally renowned architects such as Helen Sandman (Finland) and Karla Beckstrand (Sweden), as well as Ukrainian and Lithuanian architects.

The winning technical design from the competition will be provided free of charge to the communities of Ukraine and interested building partners.

The Central Project Management Agency (CPVA) in Lithuania, with significant experience in Ukraine since 2014, is responsible for project implementation. Arturas Žarnovskis, the head of the “Co-create Future of Ukraine” program at CPVA, believes that the new project will help overcome delays in the planning and construction of schools: “Lithuania has already restored several educational institutions in Ukraine. From our own experience, we know that the first thing a donor needs to decide on the reconstruction of a facility is a technical design. We aim to create a modern, Ukraine-needs-based adaptive school project with Ukrainian and global architects. We call on the global community of architects to join the competition “Future School for Ukraine.”

It is worth noting that the Interstate Consultants Engineers Guild keeps constant communication with Lithuanian institutions, including the Central Project Management Agency of Lithuania. ICEG provides consultations to Lithuanian partners and comprehensive support for projects implemented by them in Ukraine. This approach is part of ICEG’s active stance in supporting the comprehensive recovery of Ukraine.

In particular, on December 5, 2023, a meeting of the Ukrainian-Lithuanian Business Council took place, attended by ambassadors of Lithuania and Ukraine, Ukrainian Members of Parliament, representatives of Lithuanian government structures, representatives of local self-government bodies in Ukraine, as well as Svitlana Reva, ICEG Vice President. During the meeting, Lithuanian Ambassador Valdemaras Sarapinas noted that Lithuania had allocated 3% of its GDP to assist Ukraine. This is a significant indicator, and we are grateful to the Lithuanian government for this outstanding assistance.
