On February 24, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to discuss providing Ukraine with an interest-free EU loan amounting to 90 billion euros regardless of the Hungarian veto.
“The loan was agreed upon by EU leaders from 27 member states, and this decision cannot be revoked,” von der Leyen stressed noting that the EU has different mechanisms to fulfill it. This funding open new opportunities to Ukraine for infrastructure development and engineering projects which is important to both defense and postwar recovery.
The loan will be used to support transport and energy infrastructure damaged by the war and urban utilities including water supply, sewerage, and power grids. It will facilitate introduction of modern building technologies, implementation of engineering projects jointly with European partners, and integration of Ukrainian solution in global supply chains.
ICEG is convinced that this loan opens vast opportunities to Ukrainian engineers and builders, notably funding of large construction projects during Ukraine’s recovery, introduction of innovative technologies in transport, energy and utility sectors, as well as creation of new jobs in affected regions.
This support demonstrates that international financial aid not only strengthens Ukraine’s defense capacity but also stimulates development of the critical infrastructure, opening new prospects for the country’s modernization.
