Alternative rail route to transport cargo from Odesa to the Danube ports

October 15, 2024

In March 2024, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and JSC “Ukrainian Railways” signed a memorandum on joint action for preparation, implementation and evaluation of the project “Feasibility study of increasing the capacity of Odesa – Izmail – Reni railway section in Ukraine” and consequent restoration and development of railway infrastructure. The feasibility study is planned to be funded with grants from the South Korea.

Yet, delivery of the following stages of design and construction of the alternative route for cargo transportation from Odesa to the Danube river ports will need additional co-financing.

The project covers reconstruction of the Zatoka bridge and infrastructure upgrade along the entire route including the ports of Izmail and Reni in Ukraine, Giurgiulești in Moldova and Galați in Romania.

Ukrainian Railways is interested in cooperation to attract the additional co-financing for the project of increasing the capacity of Odesa – Izmail – Reni railway section after the feasibility study is completed. Commencement of work with the help of Korean partners is an important milestone.

As part of MoUs with foreign partners, ICEG has informed the companies potentially interested in engineering service provision in construction projects and offered guidance with their legalization in Ukraine and during implementation of recovery programs.
